I've 'only' had a couple of cab rides in Deltics but I have driven class 31, 37 and 47 - before I was old enough to drive a car!! There was not a lot else constructive (as opposed to destructive) to do in Teesside in the 70's

My personal favourites are 40's although, if I'm honest, you can't really beat the sound of a Deltic.

for me its a nice pair of 20's in multiple never heard a Deltic run in the flesh I'm afraid (that's not to say I wouldn't enjoy it). I'm too young to know them in traffic. Nothing quite like cruising slowly up under a bridge then moving the power handle open and making loads of clagg and noise. Then the turbos whistle to a nice purr.

Well class's of 27,31,37 & 47 I didnt realise you lot were that old

I wasn't even born then.

well this was my introduction to proper engines, and I there was no steam, so having not experienced it I am not able to comment. although I do agree steam does have a magic about it.

Gosh, hadn't seen one for years, then two days ago sitting in our caravan at Sizewell, I heard one coming down the branch line to collect the neuclear stuff from the power station- grubby BR wishy-washy blue, but still an impressive hulk!

I like steam engines. I have never driven one but I plan to have a go next year, at the Dean Forest Railway (http://www.deanforestrailway.co.uk/).

I am taking a few days away next month, at Ironbridge. I am going up by train and part of the journey will be on the Severn Valley Railway (Some of their staff are rather pleased to see someone carrying suitcases using the train as a "Proper traveller".

I undertsnad why preserved lines have diesels and ofcourse some are now historic themselves. However steam is what does it for me.

I'm looking forward to firing Morayshire next sunday at Bo'ness - partly because the A4 'Union of South Africa' will be in the yard alongside - and I intend to swing a few shovels in it's firebox so I can say I have fired an A4 !! Both are Gresley designed 3 cylinder engines - with his very clever 'conjugated' valve gear mechanism (actually he stole the design!!) for the centre cylinder!

My favourite is the GWR 1400 0-4-2 pulling a single autocoach on the Forest of Dean. This set was laid on to take guests from the car park at Norchurch to Parkend for my brother in law's birthday party. He drives on the FoD. Incidentally Happy Birthday sung by the Chepstow Male Voice Choir was impressive having suddenly realised that it was being sung in tune.

I used to live in Ramsbottom. The best thing about the town was the railway. From our back door you could see steam trains summer and winter.

I miss them.
