Hi peoples

I have heard of certain types of sealants causing corrosion to the body work of steel cars, my question is what sealant should I use for the gearbox floor panel.

any help greatly appreciated.

Dum Dum is suitable but is a bit messy and sticky.

Im looking to use Bostic/evostic glasticord grey butyl non setting sealing strip on the traveller gearbox panel. Its designed for automotive use between bolted panels and is also heat resistant up to stoving temperatures.

I havent checked if its available in small quantities yet.

wilcos say they don't stock dum dum or the bostik stuff, they believe there closet equivalent i could try is gun gum exhaust repair..... :roll:

gonna try a paint supplier next and see if they do it, any one know of a supplier in Norwich?

We used to get paint and stuff from either exhausts unlimited (off aylsham road near the lights at the junction with mile cross road/woodcock road behind the shops) or it was express radiators (dont know where they are as they delivered to us) this was a couple of years ago so I can't remember which supplied the paint stuff I just know that everything the boss asked to be ordered they had which was a bonus. They do good trade discounts if you ask :wink: I can see the birth of NSLoco motors coming up :D

I shal give them a look, for now as its relatively dry I put the cover back without the sealant, but once I have it and a weekend I will give it a go. how are you minors?

Ezmerelda still going strong but Paddy is awaiting funds to buy body panels as he is even more rotted than I first thought and moneys a bit tight since the construction company I did the books for has folded.

I intend to live forever.....so far so good

oh no, I know the feeling of having to wait for funds, now I have my welder i can get on with some of the work but as you can see Ive been struck down by engine troubles which forced me turn my attention to Nobby, but now she has new metal in the engine bay and it has given me the opportunity to remove the lump out of Brenda and get her engine bay done, she needs new everything it seams... Just hope my welds are up to scratch once I get the time to start on her again, got to re-build the old engine first and put a new clutch and gearbox on it so I can be safe in the knowledge I have a spare ready to go if the current one gives up.

Rather than describing all of the different sealants that you can use, it may be useful to point out why there are some you cant use.

Primarily this is silicone sealant, since it uses acetic acid as a plasticiser to keep the silicone fluid ... obviously you dont want to be squirting acid into places that are in contact with metal.

If you go with a mastic rather than silicone sealant then you 'should' be ok, however read the ingredients before you spend any money.

thankyou thats the cookie, I was keen to not cause the further decomposition of my minor, im worried one day it might wash away down a drain as it is :-)

So avoind anything containing acetic acid

I think i will have a good hunt round I have a few sources to try and i will let you guys know what I do to seal this thing. right now im so glad to be able to drive her again :-)

Most engineering supply shops will be able to point you in the right direction, just tell them what you want to use it for and they will point you towards the best stuff for the job.

I've found that as soon as you head away from the retail end of the market you find that people are a lot more helpful and knowledgeable ... still the acetic acid thing I learned from a post on here :D

I'd still go with Dum Dum for sealing around your gearbox. It's less messy it you find for some reason you need to remove the cover in the future. It doesn't have any "nasties" in it that attack paint finishes. It's available from any minor suppliers mail order - (they do small tins which aren't heavy to post), and it keeps.
