Trunnion replacement

Well, Just had a successful day of assembling the entire offside front suspension. New track rod ends, all poly bushes, new trunnions the lot...its starting to look like a car again :D

The one question I have though, as I couldnt find a mention of it in the workshop manual. Is how far down do you screw down the trunnions? I sortve guessed the first time and screwed them all the way down then went back a turn or so, so that I could get full rotation. Is this as accurate as it gets, or have I completely fudged up my ride height or steering geometry now?

That is the correct method. As long as you can get full lock and a bit more on the steering and the fulcrum pin through the lower trunnion that is fine. The more threads you have meshed the better.

That's what I do - ride height can be adjusted where the torsion bar is anchored to the crossmember.
Put a good smattering of grease on the outside of all the trunnion seals, top and bottom. Unless you're off for an MOT soon, in which case leave it till after you've got the ticket.

Ahh glad to hear I did it correctly.

What Grade grease should I pump them full of?

I use Moly grease! And yes - you have set the trunnions correctly.

It is best to pack the trunnions with grease before assembly. This ensures that the grease has worked its way completely up the threads. If the trunnions are greased after assembly the grease can escape through the cap on the top trunnion and through the fulcrum pin hole on the lower trunnion without reaching the other end of the trunnion.

Tried that and it just takes the easiest route. Thats why I pack them first so I know that the grease is all the way up.

I smothered the threads on the kingpins in grease before I put the trunnions on. So should be Ok.

Just give the trunnions and track rod ends a squirt of grease every time you have the wheels off to check the brakes or anything.
