Reversing judder

So there we were, me and another soul from this messageboard, discussing the state of play with our vehicles (over mugs of tea and chocolate rich teas naturally) and we get round to the subject of juddering in reverse. Albert does this despite new engine and gearbox mountings and new steady bar. The rear springs and rubbers are new too and the gearbox restraint cable has been adjusted several times to effect a cure. So we start thinking about the rear brakes. There are no behive springs in there and the pads don't have the trailing edges taken off as seems common practise for some. Could one of these or both be causing the problem?

The traditional answer is a contaminated clutch plate.
I've tried the same remedies as you to no avail but I'm still not keen to change the clutch (see least liked jobs thread).

After doing all of the above it can only realistically be the clutch - unless the rear axle is not sitting square due to misaligned mountings or a twist in it.....

You could fit the beehive springs to eliminate that, probably not that though, still nice to fit them.

More revs and more clutch slip gets around the problem of judder when reversing the MM up the sloping drive with the trailer on the back. Clutch smokes a bit afterwards but it seems to recover.

I had a broken leaf in one spring and the car developed terrible clutch judder. Because of where it was it wasn't visible with the car sat on the ground, or up on ramps. It was only when I jacked the car up to do something else I saw the failed spring....

I'm thinking clutch contamination too now as it did it in 1st (at low revs - fine if you give it welly though) and all the gears are getting really stiff to engage.....

Lets pick a date then. make it soon and I could accomodate 4 more Sadmoggers and the'd each have a packet of rich tea of their own!

I have just removed the beehive springs from what is my 4th Minor, none of the others had them and guess what? No difference at all. The brake shoes are worth chamfering in my opinion, definitely less grabby.
Hope it isn't your clutch. Good luck
