indicator - audible warning?

I have a hole - I think my peg must have fallen out at some point. I must check a second column in the future.
No problem though....the two philips screws hold the mechanism firmly.

I like the 'carrier bag' idea - I suppose you' need a few together.

I was having a look at the steering column and took off the top of the shroud over the indicator mechanism without doing anything to the steering wheel. I can see the nut on the column, does this just need adjusting up so it makes contact with the indicator? Seems too easy!

You may be able to get the cancelling lugs in the mechanism to come into contact with the small bolt by just slackening the underdash clamp nuts and bolts, and moving the outer tube up or down - it shouldn't have to be by very much.
I got to thinking about this possibilty after reading your post. I think you meant that you loosened the shroud, rather than took it off? Probably it wouldn't be a good idea to go poking around with a spanner in the limited space available if the bolt needs raising up. But it's probably good quality steel and I can't see it having worn down significantly, if at all.
Give the clamp bolts a loosen, and jiggle up or down with the outer tube, on which the mechanism is clamped. I'm quite sure that could do it. You might need a torch.
I've just been down to look at a column which is off the car - I can't see any way that the small bolt or the lugs would wear enough to necessitate the adjustment of the bolt. You never know what folk have done in the past, though!

Take the wheel off and you will be able to see what is going on rather than guess at what it might be happening.
I think ther gubbins that come into contact with the dome headed bolt are brass so they will wear long before the bolt ever does.
The chances are, it's been fitted wrong, some little part such as a little spring has gone missing, the domed nut is gone or something else I can't imagine at the moment.
Have a look and believe it can work and does on many Minors. It just needs a bit of fettling ( or replacing) and it will be as good as new.

Good points. Thinking further now, if the 'gubbins' are brass, or even mild steel, they would wear in a smooth way as they make the gentle contact with the bolt and would remain rounded and looking good even if worn.

Definitely better with the wheel off, but I learnt from other posts elsewhere that Geraldine is just starting her maintenance career.

The posts here on this subject should give her a good insight into the thinking processes we all enjoy. If you can get it sorted out in your mind before you pick up the tools, you're almost there!

Just a quick note, leave the nut on by a few threads when you pull the wheel off. Broken noses are not fun.....
