uneven wear on the front tyres

If you are replacing the TRE then get the tracking checked anyway and see how it goes from there. Try swapping the tyres around, put the backs on the front and see if that cures the problem.

Doesn't the "modern" tracking bolt on to all 4 wheels and check tracking and camber? Not sure about castor. Sure my local garage did that when they tracked our moggie. The computer did not have morris in it, so they asked what I wanted it to be tracked at.

No different car. that was the red Cabriolet. I dare not look at the tracking on the six wheeler.

In case it's lost in the circles, tracking errors (too much toe in or toe-out) will either wear both inner edges or both outer edges.
If you have different tyres then one tyre can be much more worn than the other but the pattern will be the same (different tread patterns may allow one wheel to bias and the other to slide)

Wear patterns as you suggest would either be heavy right hand cornering / roundabouts or a serious alignment problem that isn't just tracking.

Thank you, Ray. It really hadn't occurred to me before it was suggested here that the differential wear might be down to cornering hard; which I'm afraid I do, rather; but I shall certainly check the camber when I've sorted the other stuff.

If you corner hard round lots of roundies - swap the front tyres over side to side every now and again to even out the wear.

I shall do that! -hopefully, the box of goodies from BM will arrive today and I can get started on the tie rod. Treasure in store....
