I stand corrected Lou, I was just looking at the month (both October) rather than chassis number so assumed they were changed at exactly the same time , but Dan's car is a 4-door anyway
Dan, did you mean smoke grey? How well would that work with the red interior?

No photos for this post I'm afraid, I forgot to take my camera with me!
For the last week the minor has been neglected as I have had to concentrate my efforts on getting the fiesta stripped and off to the scrap man. It was a sad day when it left but theres no way it would have passed the MOT without a small fortune spent - so its for the greater good (if anyone wants any fiesta bits, let nme know!!)
Anyway to minors:
So went to the lockup today with a shelving unit to start to try and get things a bit more organised in there. Most small parts are stacked on shelves and I've got a fridge, radio and gas ring in there for food / brews etc...
For the last few times I've been in there I've been trying to get the drivers side sill covers off. Each time spraying with release oil and trying to undo the bolts which have been seized solid. Today however, I had a revelation - I had been poking around the rear floor area and realised that there wasn't a great deal of metal there, I stuck a screwdriver between the sill cover and the finishing stip and made a huge gap! I figured at this point that I could likely get the finisher off with a bit of brute force and ignorance. So after a bit of a hammer and screwdriver session I was getting nowhere. In the end, I decided to lever the top part of the sill cover off the lip on the top of the sill - having done this, the whole section near enough fell off!
What did it reveal? Not a lot really! There was NO metal there. I knew the sills had been done before by a previous owner and it seems they made a decent stab at it. The inner sill box section (the bit with the round holes in it) had been replaced by steel sheet - looks like it was a reasonable thickness to start with but had started rotting out at the bottom (but the welds were VERY good quality, so it might be a pig to re-do but at least I now know whats there! Its perhaps a little worse than I was expecting but its not too bad.
The amount of rust now on the garage floor is pretty staggering, I've left it there so when I next get down there I can get some pictures!
Even though I've not been down to the garage in the last few days, its still been pretty productive. Thanks to the guys on the Owners Club forum (mmoc.org) I've learned that Basil was destined for export and was originally painted smoke blue (not to be confused with smoke grey) which was only produced in late 54 and early 55. Guess what colour he will be painted when he's done!!???
The export marker has also set some questions going in my mind. Manufactured in 55, (possibly) exported and then registered in 57. Did he sit on a dockside waiting to go abroad before eventually being sent to a UK dealership? I kind of like the idea that he might have been sold to a brit abroad, who knew they would be coming back and specified a right hand drive car.
Anywy, I'll get some pics posted next time I go to the garage
Least there is no nasty surprises, you never know what you’re going to get when you open a sill up for the first time. This looks unmolested so it’s a replacement rather than having to spend time and money fixing bodges from the past.
