hi all have finally decided to replace the rear door glass on the 4 door. (dont worry im being sad and replacing them with glass from a car of the same year to keep all the sad people who know how to date glass happy)(you know who you are)

now i know the two nuts under the rear quarterlight need to be taken out. do i need to take the rear door handle mechanism out of the door to get at these? if so how do i get the mechanism out of the door after taking off the outside door handle? as usual the workshop manuals only refer to 2 door doors.

Anyway, look at the 'triplex toughened' logo in the corner, the position of the small dots around the outside will tell you when it was manufactured.

why is the date of the glass important, i understand thew need to keep the car original if thats what you like, but if the car is being kept on the road and the glass looks right and is functional, why?

I used to use it when buying 2nd hand cars to check that the car hadn't been crashed. The theory being if your told its not been crashed but the glass down one side is of a significantly different year, something has happened thatcould be serious.

ahh i see, well mine has been bodged up by weld spaltters b4 I owned it, I was just gonna buy new and replace it. But im not intending on parting with nobby ever so im not so concerned with re-sale value.

'well mine has been bodged up by weld spaltters' yes thats why mine needs changed. you could light a match off the back glass!!! so any ideas about how to get at the back two nuts?

To answer your original question you can undo the two bolts under the quaterlight with a small ratchet and a 2inch extension bar, then undo the small bolts in the window frame itself with a cross pointed screwdriver, not forgetting the two bolts in the door frame under the rubber bungs then simply ?? remove the frame and glass it is very fiddly but eventually it does come out .The rubber seal outside the glass is stuck to the bodywork give this a good tug makes the job a lot easier .I took the lock off but really this did not help its the locking bar that gives the problem getting that off is something of a chinese puzzle.

thanks for that yes very fiddly job. get it all apart surprisingly easily was expecting the two small nuts under the quarterlight to shear off but they didnt. getting them back on was footery too. but its all done now just in time for more bad weather!!! thanks guys.
