I've got an old TR82. It takes a 9v PP9 battery, I'm guessing yours will be the same. You can get the battery from Wilkinsons. A non-educated guess on the value would be about £40.

You ain't gonna run those valves off 9 volts I'm afraid - You will need 120 volts high tension and about 10 volts for the low tension - Its been a while since I played with the old valve sets but you can make up battery packs by wiring a dozen 9v batterys together for the HT side and some AA's for the LT side - The original batterys are no longer available.... The TR82 that moggie-tom has is a transistor radio and will run on 9 volts fine - Asda used to sell the PP9's quite cheaply....

:-) There's a good chance it won't work anyway as the capacitors dry up - That yellow waxy tube to the right of the second pic is one and there will be loads of little Hunts caps in there too. They can be replaced though and its good to get life out of the old radios - I've litteraly got a loft full of them that I must sort through and sell one day......

Oops to many experts DO NOT USE 10 Volts for the heaters it will seriously damage the valves, these valves were designed for portability and run on 1.5 volt heaters and 90 volt HT supply. The batterys are no longer available but a D cell will run the heaters for a while and you can join together 10 x 9 volt batterys in series for the HT. It has a good chance of running as the voltages are so low so the capacitors dont often get leaky in my experince. As for the value because of the lack of batterys they tend to fetch very low prices unless it is a rare model or a mains battery one this one although in quite nice condition it is not all that rare. Another alternative is to buy a battery eliminator, they used to be a guy on ebay sold a kit of parts for one of these to supply the 90 volt HT but it is not reccomended you buld it if you have no experience as you are dealing with lethal voltages in this design. How do I know all this............I used to work in a radio shop after school from the age of 12 ( I am nearly 51 now) so dealt with these when they were relatively new. I now refurbish old valve record players to sell on ebay and repair valve amplifiers etc for private individuals cos I am the only person I know who still knows how to service valve gear round these parts.

I have just bumped into a supply of around 350 record players collected by one guy over several years so will be quite busy for a few years !!!!!!

I intend to live forever.....so far so good

Its amazing how long this old tech can last, I have a 1946 Pye radio that worked instantly after a quick clean up on almost all original parts. Appart from the round socket 3 point plug and material mains wire it had on it!

Sadly after several months regular use it blew a fuse, so is now waiting for me to change a capacitor or two, which despite being a fairly simple job has been on the waiting list for almost a year now... :(

Thanks for reminding me Nigel re the LT requirements - As I said, it has been a while since I played with the old valve radios. Andrew, I've got some service data on CD's somewhere so If you rig up some batteries and have no luck getting any sound out I could scan a copy for you.....
