iPod Touch

Post by pao7psb »

Hi all,

I am thinking of investing in an iPod Touch, but had a few questions - perhaps if anyone has one they may be able to help me?

1) Is the web browser any good - e.g. is it easy enough to look at this site and post messages!
2) I am led to believe that any music I already have in Windows Media Player can be converted so that it is playable by the Apple player - is there any significant loss of sound quality as a result of this?
3) And will it keep the little thumbnails of album covers when they convert over?
4) Do most of the apps that you can get for the iPhone work on an iPod Touch?
5) Does anyone know how many GB loading up a film (say 2hrs long) would take up, and how long it would take to upload?
6) Is the BBC iPlayer any good on it?

Cheers,

Paul.

Well.. it seems pretty good from any of my friend's reviews! Just remember never to leave it in your back pocket and sit on it!

2) Nope, I did this when I first got my iPod, the files stayed the same, and were only converted to be in iTunes format, which I find much easier to use!
5) It depends on the speed of your computer/iPod relay.

I've only briefly played with a friend's one, but the web browser seemed pretty nice (much better than IE Mobile on my smartphone). I'm led to believe that pretty much any iPhone app will work on an iPod Touch as long as it doesn't require hardware that only iPhones have - eg. GPS, camera, and mobile data (other than WiFi).

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

I have just got an iphone - you can browse this site on it without any problems. It works on wifi very well - nearly as quick as my PC. Now, at last, I can look stuff up in the garage.

The web browser is based on WebKit, so you should get the same response from websites as you do from Safari or Chrome.

The process of converting one lossy format to another will likely lead to a reduction in quality at the waveform level, however whether you can hear that difference in quality is another question entirely - I doubt that anyone would be able to tell the difference without the aid of an oscilloscope.

I would expect that iTunes will probably either retain the album art, or will download new copies - you will probably find that albums you didnt have art for before now have it :D

AFAIK the iPod Touch is an iPhone without the phone parts, so as long as the app doesnt need the phone bits then it should work just fine on the touch.

The time to upload a film will be dwarfed by the time taken to reprocess it to fit the iPod screen, that speed will depend greatly on your desktop's available processing power.

BBC iPlayer works great on my Xperia, I dont have an iPhone but the source and playback of the video data is the same. (flash/h.264)

Arh ... innit just the best phone ever ... WAY better than the iPants ... I cant wait to load Android on it though , WM6 is awful!

Have you tried the new beta version of Opera, it's much better than the one that comes bundled (although it does have some rough edges)
