What happens if you retard too much ? Can this have a effect on the running of the engine ???

Well yes - it will lose a little performance. Best to retard too much - then advance little by little until you get slight pinking - then retard a tiny bit so there is no (or only a tiny trace) of pinking. That's it perefctly set for your engine .
