948 engine number

Post by pfgiz »

I've just got hold of a replacement 948 for Annie. It's a very tidy Gold-Seal unit that carries the engine number 95-H. I thought the 948’s where 9M-H, H relating to high-compression, but I’d guess as this is a replacement engine the 95 is something to do with it’s size as it could go in any number of cars.

Also should I paint it green or keep it gold? It has the recon plate on the side so all is in order and it’s been removed from something that required a fuel pump as the blanking plate has been removed. But I can nick the one off the engine coming out to replace it.

All in all I’m happy with it and, with a little work, will have the old girl fully operational again. Then it’s time for Puddles……..

Yes -the 'Gold Squeal' idea seems to appeal to some ! If the 'Gold' is tidy looking - may as well keep it - but if it's a mess - repaint it - Gold or otherwise!

Looks like gold is winning through. I've got a pot of engine green does anyone know the right shade for gold as I need to paint the fuel pump cover plate.

OK

Picked up this engine yesterday and it's a beauty.
The engine number was wrong it wasn't 95-H it was 9S-H but what difference I have no idea.

On the side of the block is a plate that states it’s reconditioned. It also has Bore Size A and Crank Size A on it. Does anyone know what these mean?

I now need to clean the head down, regrind the valves and fit it.

Measure the bores - caliper will do - and pop the sump off to check bearing sizes. May as well be sure what state it's in before fitting!
