new flasher unit only lasted 7 days...

Hi, are there any issues with flasher units as far as anyone knows? My old one was manky and erratic, ordered a new one, everything working perfectly with a good flash rate, a week later it's packed up entirely - nothing. Still got power to it and the fuses are ok

Take it back for refund! Just check the connections are ok - with the wires into the Lucar connectors. And the connectors onto the flasher.

Yours must be from a particularly bad batch! The one I bought earlier this year lasted about six weeks- not bad by modern day quality standards. Like lots of things, I ended up using a good secondhand one.

Very annoying when you use the vehicle everyday! I am going to join the 2 dark green wires together for a couple of days so I will have a manual method of flashing.
I don't suppose there is a better item available as I don't have a secondhand one?

try ebay they come up quite often

i do haqve some old stock new ones kicking about some where i ill have a look but i may have sold them all on here

New ones generally very reliable - you either have another fault - or have been unlucky.

Just joined the 2 dark green wires and the winkers stay on fine both sides....can't think what other fault there could be really.

Well the replacement one they sent lasted 2 weeks so there is some improvement here - am seriously looking for a better quality item - opened the broken unit up to reveal a totally Mickey Mouse and fragile bit of kit, sort of thing you get in a Christmas cracker:(
Too cheap methinks would pay more than £4.50 for something decent.

New old stock is the answer really. But maybe that new one was subjected to vibration ? Where was it mounted ?

Mounted where the standard unit is, on the bulkhead. Never used to have trouble with these things in the past!

Hmmm - never been a problem for me either. Are the bulbs all the correct 21 watt/12 volt type ? Is there any chance of a short circuit somewhere - at one of the lamps perhaps. When they flash - do they flash at the correct speed - both sides ? Should be between 60/120 flashes to pass MOT.

Cormorant is quite right about the dismal quality of some modern flasher units. The ones I've dismantled have had the flimsiest imaginable connections resistance welded to the bimetallic strip. The other problem with some of them is that they're described as "2x21W +5W", and don't like running without a side repeater (the "+5W").

If you've already converted to negative earth, try something like

Fitted one to my son's MGBGT 5000 miles ago, and no trouble yet.

Yes I am negative earth might try one of these though it doesn't look original. Will post a pic of the insides of this unit when I replace it again and we can all have a laugh

And yes bmc bulbs are 21w and flash rate was normal

Mine has a ford flasher fitted, I don't know what its from but If you want any info off it, i can get my head under the bonnet and read off the part numbers. Agreed it doesn't look original, but it works! you could always hide it somewhere other than its original location.

Can someone explain this.

I have a new indicator stalk, bulb holdes and relay. When I switch the indicators on, the relay ticks very slowly but the lights flash twice as quick.

If I turn them off and on quickly, they flash at the correct rate.

Any ideas?
