losing power

Post by jtd.75 »

Hi all last night I had a phone call from a fellow club member asking me for some advice :D. On any incline is morris loses power and the pump ticks like mad, all is ok on normal tick over, he tells me that he has checked for the usual! leaks of both petrol and air. He tells me that on a flat run all seems ok. ( We do have a few hills here :D ). I said that I would lend him a spare pump to try out. As anyone got any thoughts on this problem.

Maybe a problem with the pick-up pipe inside the petrol tank. Fill the tank to the brim - and see how it does then!

I agree sounds like an air hole in the pick up pipe - when the tank is on a slope the level of petrol tilts to the back and the pump sucks air from the hole.

Not sure if it is that pipe - may need a new tank - or just keep it well filled up! Otherwise - don't see what else would make the pump tick hard on hills!

I'd try parking the car on a steep slope and seeing if that causes the pump to suck air (tick over quickly). If so disconnect the pipe from the pump and see if you can suck any air through it. If so I'd suggest a new tank - they're not that expensive and once the lead pipe rusts out you can be sure the rest of the tank will be pretty gungy

YUK David you must like the taste of unleaded :o .
How about lashing up some clear pipe between pipe and pump then look for bubbles?
Easier said than done, but you won't get me sucking any petrol pipes.

You might be able to sell it as part of an initiation ceremony, but I don't think it will catch on as a health tonic :)

Ahh but see I was a teenage during the 70's oil crisis when we had petrol rationing here in Australia - siphoning was a regular past-time and I developed quite a taste for petrol!

Aftershave and energy drink, good luck with your advertising.
Might I suggest "Eau de unleaded" Juice of dinosaur filtered through desert sand for a million years and mined by Bedouins ?
