Brake and clutch return springs

Post by silverfox »

I've been renewing the pedal arrangement on my 1960 minor and found the remains of a brake return spring. I can see where the spring fits to the brake pedal but what does the other end fix to. Also does the clutch pedal have a return spring and if so where does this fit. (Mines fitted with a midget gearbox and ital engine ie hydraulic clutch).Thanks.

The other end of the brake pedal spring should attach to a bracket inside the chassis rail, however, these are usually rotted away so you will have to make a new one - just an L shaped bracket with a small hole in will do. The clutch return spring would have originally gone from the clutch pivot arm to a hole in the engine backplate but I'm not sure about the requirement with a hydraulic system although I would imagine it is still required?

the bracket in chassis leg might still be there, but burried under rust debris etc...
The bracket needs to be well attached as the spring is quite fierce when stretched (I had the pleasure of fitting a new one this weekend on a Traveller - it's not too bad when you've got the knack)
