questions questions.....
...All related
1098 engine....
In my stash of bits, i have a 940 mg metro head (no bypass)..so need to fit water pump without the bypass. Will the mg metro pump fit the 1098 ok?
Carb..got a hif 44 on mg metro inlet manifold and 38 hif ....The 38 would be the better one to fit, will it fit the manifold the 44 is on ok?
Cam..Should i stick with the standard cam, or maybe go for the mg metro one? ..which would be better? If i go for the metro one the oil pump will need changing, so do i use the mg metro oil pump as well to match the drive? ...Camshaft bearings, how easy is it to remove and replace them? i know the oil holes have to line up, but are they easy enough to get out and put back in?
Cheers
Tim

Re: questions questions.....
Just answering the bit I know about:
I don't know what air filter you're planning to use but they're different (including the elbow) between MG Metro and 1.0 Metro.
Yes it does fit, but make sure you've got the plate with the bit the throttle cable goes through as they might be different.timmo wrote: Carb..got a hif 44 on mg metro inlet manifold and 38 hif ....The 38 would be the better one to fit, will it fit the manifold the 44 is on ok?

Th MG head is the big valve version - probably a wee bit OTT for a 1098 - but it will run ok. Use the MG Metro camshaft - if SURE it is an MG cam - and yes - use the matching oil pump. The MG cam is the BEST cam ever put in an A series from the factory. If you have all this stuff - use the timing gear too so you get the tensioner - and the crankshaft damper too! Cam bearings - leave well alone ! Thye 'never' need changing - unless the engine has been roasted/ground to a standstill through lack of oil seizure that sort of thing. The bearings are a serious problem to change - not a home job.
Yes - the 38 will fit the manifold ok - but with that head and cam - you may be wanting the bigger HIF44 carb! Get the best exhaust system you can afford.
Check the lift etc on the valves - you may need to sink the exhaust valves into the head by up to 40 thou - usually they have 'recessed' slightly by themselves - and there should be enough clearance unless using a high lift cam. The MG cam is same lift as the standard cam - so no worries there.

OK, cheers....So you think the 44 would be better?
And will the MG metro water pump fit?
Crankshaft damper...is that off the MG metro too? I understand the principle of them, but never had anything to do with them..cant say ive ever seen one LOL ..is it incorperated in the crank pully?
Any pics and info gratefully recieved
Cheers Tim

If it's a factory unleaded head (IIRC a factory MG Metro head should be) then it's unlikely the seats have worn much as they were hardened. Having the seats cut deeper to recess the valves a bit will remove the hardening, so leading to possible VSR over lifetime if you believe in it (independantly proven by uber-reliable specialists...)Check the lift etc on the valves - you may need to sink the exhaust valves into the head by up to 40 thou - usually they have 'recessed' slightly by themselves
Hif38 would be my choice on a gas flowed 1098 unless you want to do track days.
and yes, camshaft bearings to be left alone unless they are wrecked - in which case try another block!

If the head has the larger inlet valves - the exhaust seats are nothing special - and they will likely have recessed slightly. Very probably you won't have to doa nything - but I do have to advise you to measure the clearance ! When the MG went 'unleaded' - it reverted to the standard size valve head - same as any other unleaded 1275 of the era.

I'm only mentioning it because the MG metro unleaded head that's in my dining room (of course
