Wonder if I should cut grooves in my Wolseley drums... ;)

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

[devils advocate mode]
brakes are useless once the grip is overcome
[/devils advocate mode]
seriously though, if there is anyone readying this and thinking they can just slap on big brakes, you cant it needs to be balanced so that the braking effort can be efficently passed to the road surface (well technically the motion of the vehicle must be eficiently transfered to rotary motion through the tyre, where it can then get dissipated by the brakes as heat following conversion to heat through friction.

Probably not pressing the brake pedal hard enough also. I remember looking at a study carried out on a driving simulator that found people rarely stamped on the brakes hard enough and for long enough in many rear end shunts.
It sort of stands to reason really. you have to brake pretty hard on a dry road to get the ABS working, and stamping on the brakes at 70+ in a modern to that extent can get quite uncomfortable.
I agree with your sentiments about the gap between vehicles, it drives me crazy to see people driving so close.
Hope your brakes are wearing better Polo2K, did you find the answer?
I did the front wheel bearing on the SAAB today and noticed my discs were quite worn. That's 2 loads of DS2500 and 1 set of standard pads that it's had since they were fitted. You're right about the DS2500 being expensive, that's why I went back to standard, but they do fade badly if you give it a caning!
18 months out of a set of discs is pretty harsh though! How many miles do you do?
