Front Hub Nuts

Hi guys. I hope I am welcome here - I don\'t have an MM but I do have an early Series II which shares all the same mechanicals apart from engine and box. Same front hubs, diff, interior, brakes etc etc. Externally the only thing to differentiate her from a late MM is the bonnet flash.

Anyway, my question is can someone help me in sourcing some front hub nuts? They are quite different from later cars, a coarser thread. None of the Morrie spares companies seem to have the early nuts, only later ones. I\'d like to get hold of one for both sides.

David. I have just spoken to C. Ware. They have only ever stocked and supplied 5/8 UNF nuts. They recon that all the running gear is UNF thread. Steve

Is he saying all nuts are the same regardless of series? If so, this is not the case. The MM and early Series II thread is coarser than the later ones. ESM sent me later ones (twice!!) and I finally found a correct one but it was a number of years ago and not sure where from.

According to the parts book, the hub nuts, wheel bolts and other threads changed from BSF to UNF at chassis no. 126725 (LHD) and 131858 (RHD)
Chassis numbers were allocated in batches at this time which is why there is a difference in the numbers.
3/8 Whit headed wheel bolts were produced with a UNF thread for the early Series II, (the same head size as the M1000 wheel nuts) but early MMs are stuck with the 5/8 A/F head BSF thread bolts

Well, in "Series II Land" my parts book says there was a change to the hub nut at Car No: 228267, but it doesn't say what the change was exactly.

My car is 201157 (I'm guessing a different range of numbers was used between MM and Series II??) so mine is pre the change.

All I know is that on the hub nut sold by all the companies the thread is too fine for my swivel pins, and as everything else on my car is the same as MM I am guessing the nut is too.

So.........question is: What is the spec of this nut? Is it 5/8" BSF?

I know the nuts that you need give morris minor aus in victoria a ring on Tuesday and I will go through my spares and see what I can find.

The hub nuts changed again when the Series II got the M1000 rear axle, brakes and front swivel pins at 228267 although the Traveller was introduced at 216901 and already had the M1000 suspension (Original Morris Minor). If all else fails it must be possible for your local friendly machine shop to turn you out a couple of nuts, remembering that the near side is left hand thread.
The other option is to convert to M1000 swivel pins, keeping the original brakes. For instructions see Series MM website, Technical info, Swivel pin modification
LHD and RHD numbers stopped being issued in batches when SMM prefix was replaced by F series prefixes.

So, 2 front nuts from an MM would do?
I'll have a good look through the garage. Fairly certain that I've got some and then If you send me your postal address I'll get them round to you. Might take a while, though!!

Sorry I can't help, I passed on all my old MM swivels after I convered to M1000 units

I've found 2!!! Sadly, they are both right-hand threaded. I'll keep looking, though, and let you know what I can find. Have you thought about getting some cut? Ought to be quite simple to do.

PS Much coarser thread than Midget/M1000 nuts. Are you sure that the MM was left-hand threaded on the other side of the car?

Yes definately left thread on left side. As I explained to David, If you spin the wheel in its normal direction of rotation, ie forwards, it should try to tighten the nut.
I am waiting for David to send me his email address then I can send him all the thead size data which has been researched for me.

My aeroplane has right-hand threads on both sides and came with Nyloc nuts. :o :roll: Drilling for splitpins in case-hardened steel is a right PITA but worth the effort in this case.

Thanks for all the help - I am going to look into having some made locally (RH and LH thread). Two questions:

1: Can someone tell me the exact specs (thread type and size)?

2: Would anyone else be interested in a pair if I got a quantity made up?

Just an update - Thanks to Mike Perry's helpful information that the nut I'm after is a 5/8" BSF with 14TPI I have located a supply in both LH and RH thread. Seems I was looking in the wrong place - MG's used the exact same nut and they are quite easily available from MG Spares specialists!

Another satisfied customer!
The Tech Info section has just been updated to include a section about stub axle and wheel bolt threads by Graham Holt. It is recommended reading for anyone not sure what is fitted to their car.
