filter warning light

Post by ianminor »

I have checked my filter warning circuit and it seems ok but the warning light fails to light when ign is switched on [bulb is ok]
Can the sender unit be replaced? :o

I've never tried to dig one out of the housing, but the bigger problem would be getting a new one to go back in.

My best guess would be to try and get a replacement filter housing. There should be some available from a scrap 1098...
I might even have one for you!

where to break down next?

Does your filter actually have the blockage sensor?

It's not supposed to light up when Ign on! It only lights up when the filter becomes blocked - and pressure rises across the filter! Test it by earthing the wire to the engine block - it's a normally open switch that closes on rising pressure. Opposite to the 'oil pressure' switch - which is normally closed - and opens on rising pressure.

Only the later cars have filter warning lights and many of those have changed to cannister filters. The rest manage without one.
Best use for the light is to fit a towbar and use it for a trailer indicator warning light

Filter light

Post by Declan_Burns »

I use that too but as a reversing light indicator. I have a write-up on how to do it if anybody wants it. I can't upload a pdf file here and don't know if it's possible.

Good idea but if the reversing light is operated by the gear change then it doesn't need a warning light

Oh now where's the fun in that?! The whole idea was to make good use of the spare warning light! If you fit a Mini speedo - you get a green light to play with too !!

Filter light

Post by Declan_Burns »

Mike,
The light on the speedo is parallel wired from the relay that switches the reversing light on. It's just an acknowledgement light indicating that the system is working and not as such a warning light.
