Rear Hub Removal - 1" 1/8 Whitworth BMC Tool

Post by rsawatson »

Does anyone know where I could get hold of the 'mahoosive' 1" 1/8 Whitworth socket/wrench required to remove the rear hub (which would save müllering off with hammer and chisel)?

I can't find anything anywhere!

Cheers.

Most use chisel - done carefully - it's not harmful! Most rear hub nuts bear the marks now!

I bought a suitable ring spanner from HarryMango. I wouldn't use a chisel except as a last resort (MOT tomorrow morning kind of thing). Not only does it damage the nut but how are you supposed to feel whether you've tightened it sufficiently when you come to reassemble it?

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Chisel = butchery! I bought a 'mahoosive' ring spanner from my local engineering supplies, wasn't cheap, about 15 quid I think, but fits lovely!

I dont have anything at the moment but here is a socket on ebay - It's 1" drive though

1,7/8 AF is a very close fit & works so it may be easier to find?

Oh BTW, remember that the left-hand hub nut has a left hand thread! :)

You soon know when it's tight enough - don't worry. It's a once in ten years thing to be taking the rear hubs off! Hardly worth investment in special tools - they are often not tight anyway - loosen the lock tab and check. Even if not 'finger' loose - they rarely need more than a 'tap' to get them going!

I have one you can borrow - If you come to the Southern Regional Rally at Hatfield house on Sunday I'll bring it then!

Thank you RogerRust - that's a very kind offer, but afraid I shan't be there!

I think I'll just have to attack with hammer and chisel. If I ended up doing this, my plan was to replace the existing nuts with 46mm AF ones which are readily available - http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pro ... d5d0cfffe8 and not too expensive.

Many thanks for all advice.

Seriously - you won't damage the nuts -they will be perfectly re-useable !

If for some reason you can get metric spanners/sockets but not imperial ones, you could use a 48mm one on the standard nuts (which are nominally 47.24mm AF).

If I took my car to a professional garage and they used a hammer and chisel to tighten a fastening that holds the wheel on, I'd be extremely unimpressed.

Machine mart do a HUGE adjustable, but you should find that most factors can order these sized sockets.

Me, I lucked out one day at a car-boot when I was sorting through a box of sockets picking out all the whitworth ones, and the bloke said I could have the whole box for a fiver!
I swiftly removed his arm from the shoulder down and ran away as fast as I could before he changed his mind :D
