It's very very unlikely to be the 'oil pump' gasket. I've never known one to leak - but - there's always a first time I suppose!

Thanks to all as always, I'll try the rubber ones just having a little trouble finding them at the moment.

Well I guess I'm up for another prize then as that is what I was going to suggest. I had this happen and thought it was the scroll seal. One oil pump gasket later I had a leak free engine.

But even if the oil pump gasket was leaking - any leakage would escape back into the block via the drain hole handily provided just under the oil pump - and that whole area is sealed in anyway by the backplate gasket - and the backplate! So - sorry - I don't buy it!

No. Well - not in the oil pump area anyway!

Sorry to jump on this thread but ref the oil pump causing a leak. I had this on my 1275 Marina (same pump arrangement?) The pump cover had somehow worn away causing a large leak at the back of the engine so it can happen!

Ahh yes - pump cover - it must have been foul of the pump, or it's mounting bolts. But there would (normally) be no loose oil in there - but plenty of fume could escape from the drain hole which is clear into the block.

I'm now thinking that possibly the piston rings may be worn also. This would lead to a rise in sump pressure no? As recently the exhaust has been smoking whilst running. It has only just started this though.

Whilst the engine was running I removed the oil filler cap and there was air blowing out. When revved it diminished but created a barley noticeable vacuum if at all.

To be honest I've given up at the moment, turned the car round and am re-varnishing instead. Just to keep me pre-occupied!

I will keep you posted.
