Intermittent when hot

Post by mike2009 »

Hi Guys/gals,

I have recently got a 1098 minor back through MOT after being laid up in a garage for approx 5 years.

Engine starts ok with choke and will run without choke after approx 3 mins.

When engine is hot engine can really stutter, if left to cool down slightly engine will recover and run ok again!!

I have noticed that the ignition coil is really hot, could this be the cause??

Another symptom I have noticed is that the top of the carb float chamber is damp (petrol) what can cause this?

I have toiled with changing the fuel pump but this seems to tick ok, but this also seems hot on the body of the pump.

Any Ideas or suggestions.
regards

Mike

Try another coil, yours could be on the way out. Golden rule, swap one thing at a time and check the results.
The float chamber needle could be sticking, allowing too much fuel into the float chamber. Check that the float is operating correctly and is not leaking. Check that the top of the float chamber is screwed down tight. Not too tight!

Could be the float needle valv is leaking fuel slightly - when the engine is running it will use that fuel, so no problem - but when idling there could be too much fuel coming through - level rises - engine runs 'rich' etc etc. Check that needle valve - it will likely be 'ridged' - probably best to just fit a new one.
