I woke up at 8 am on sunday ready for the classic car rally at the Holt Station of the Poppline railway only to find disaster, it was raining. We prepared and went anyway and were rather relieved as the rain stopped and the sun came out at Bodham. We followed an early Rolls Royce to holt station and joined the que of classic cars waiting to get in. After a short wait we were directed to the North Norfolk Morris Minor Owners club area where we parked up next a long line of minors. There were also cars from a Trabant to Lotuses, Jaguars, Rovers, Capris, Vauxhalls Fords, Volkwagens and probably any make of car you care to mention all gleaming in the now welcome sun in fact the only car conspicuous by its absence was the Editors famous Kubelwagen or type {fill in with model no please} as it is now more correctly known.
First job, get the chairs out the boot and arrange some copys of Norfolks favourite freebie on the bonnet. Then off we went for the free train ride to Sheringham that was provided as part of our turning up to the show, We proceeded to the station and were a little perturbed at the large distance between the loos and the show field, what with my partner Pam having arthritus and so unable to walk very far. We caught the Steam train to Sheringham and had a most enjoyable trip through the Norfolk countryside, to anyone who has not done this trip I would highly recommend it for the views alone. We arrived at Sheringham and popped off to buy the inevitable ice cream and had a look at the small display of classic motorcycles and, suprisingly, classic outboard motors ! Is there nothing with an engine people will not save for posterity ?
We returned on a little diesel multiple unit (DMU) which was more like riding in a bus and it was strange to be on a train with a front window so you could see the track ahead. On arrival back at Holt we returned to the car and were pleased that at least half the Crablines had been taken. We had lunch and then after a nice rest and a chat with other car owners, one who comes on Holiday at this time of year just so he can bring his Rover for the show, we needed a wee. We headed for the entrance of the showfield and it was decided we would take one of the free classic bus rides to Sheringham station as it stopped right ouside the public toilets, much closer than the long walk up to the station at Holt! We then took the DMU back to Holt and returned to the car to find only a small number of Crablines left (its OK Philip I wont charge you for this distribution service).
On the whole it was a really enjoyable day out and i would definatly do it again, the train ride was a bonus as the normal adult rover ticket is £10.50 (seniors £9.50, Kids 5-15 £7 and family ticket £35) but with a choice of 3 trains and several old buses to ride on all covered by the same ticket I think it is excellent value for money. Thank you Poppyline for a brilliantly organised day out.
