ah.....

If the processor has fried then you're in trouble....
Try removing the CPU again, then re-fitting it and switching on, wait for it to die and touch the heat sink on the CPU. If it's very hot then it's overheating, if not then it's probably gone.

Check the fans are working, that there is nothing in the air ways, like cables and dust and make sure the heat sink on the CPU is clear of dust. Mine gets full of dust and makes the fan work itself silly....

Heatsink is stone cold (now) but I did shift about a ton of dust (maybe slight exageration) from the fan and fins of the heatsink - I wonder if this contributed to the cpu overheating and failing?

A good thing to try is to remove the memory completely .. when you switch it on it should beep like chuff, if it doesnt then the motherboard is probably fried.

Hmmmmm, removed both memchips and still no difference - no beeps - nothing!!

Hurrah - Thanks to all esp Nigel who allowed me to ask all sorts of stupid questions the old pc is now fixed - Motherboard was toast - and I replaced it myself :-)

Couldn't have done it without you :oops:

Is the old MB any good for anything or is it a bin job?

I also removed a TV card and an internal modem that I don't use anymore......
