Just dug the steering rack out from my pile of bits. As believe it or not I shall soon be re-assembling all the running gear onto the car
Ive got the boots off the rack, all seems nice and clean in there....no evidence of a worn pinion or rack. Is there anything else I should be looking for? The ball joints on the rack seem fine but have definite tight spots on them? Is it just a matter if clean up, spray up and then top up with fresh oil?

Ultimate rust cure for your moggy....paint it brown, at least that way you dont notice the rust as much!!
As long as the ball joints are not loose - it should be fine. They can be tightened up - something you can't do (easily) with modern car racks. You can take shims out at the pinion damper - but if you think it's ok - just clean it and perhaps fit new boots - and grease it rather than oil - makes it less rattly, and less likely to run out! The identical construction Mini rack was always specified to be greased - not oiled.
Thanks for the tip about using grease rather than oil in the rack. I was considering doing that anyways but was unsure about it.
Maybe that should be posted in the tips section?
