Well after nine weeks at the mechanics... and alot of bribbing with alcohol and cupcakes i have my moggie back...
so far she has had the following done...
new dynamo
head gasket fixed
converted to unleaded
engine block machined
new water pump
lots of new engine gaskets and bits and bobs
and since i have gotten her back on friday...
she needs...
a new ignition barrel
generator
brake light switch
radiator hoses!!
dammit!!
some one please tell me its all worth it!!
also she is popping out of second gear so will
be needing a new gear box soon!!
i have only owned her for 11 weeks!!
oh and they are saying that she hasnt enough
pressure in the second cylinder... and they thought
everything looked alright when they put her together..
its just never ending at the moment...
oh well...

I don't know what to say.
Its great that you finally have her back--but what's this about needing more engine work?
I think those mechanics might have been imbibing your alcoholic gifts while they were at work on your car.
You say they installed a new dynamo. Then you say that it now needs a new generator. A dynamo and a generator are the same thing! Do you mean it needs an alternator--which is a modern alternative to the dynamo. If so, why go to the expense of putting a new dynamo in when the other work was done?
If the hoses are past their use-by date, they should have been ordered and replaced when the head work was being done.
I think you said that your brother is a mechanic. See if you can get him to do his own compression tests. There should be perfect sealing of the valves after the head work, so if the compression is low on one or more cylinders, the bores, or rings are likely to be the problem. He should do a second compression check with oil in the bore(s) of the low cylinder(s) (poured through the plug hole(s)), just to make sure that the valves are sealing correctly--the head work may not have been carried out correctly. If you don't follow this para, don't worry--your brother will understand.
The ignition barrel and brake light switch are minor (duh), relatively inexpensive issues.
The pleasures of owning her are just around the corner now. So keep your amazing enthusiasm going just a little longer while we collectively sort this out.

hmmm...
I should have picked up on the dynamo/generator thing...
will check my paperwork...
i should have also said that i havent paid a cent yet and
he said he would only charge me for parts seeing he
stuffed me around so much!!
but i think my brother in law and myself will be working
on it from now on... now that the big jobs have been done!
will do the pressure test on the weekend... hopefully it
just needed to be run in!

You very definitely need another garage - rebuilding an engine, and then saying 'it looked ok' - but now has poor compression - well. As others have pointed out - dynamo = generator. You DO NOT need an alternator unless planning on having a huge array of additional lights on the car ? For you - a dynamo is probably the more reliable item to have rather than an alternator.
