It's done 22,000 miles from new, apart from the engine change all is original, superb original upholstery etc, even has a really old sticker on B post saying "next service due 19,200 miles"
I'd service the engine before anything else then!!

1098, 948 or what?

Post by probasis@btinternet.com »

Trying to i/d the engine in our recently acquired pick up (conversion) but it doesn't have a plate or 1098 stamped in block. Block has 18A moulded into casing. Assuming engine no has not been changed this shows 10V/189E/H71605. Any ideas what that makes it?

That looks like a 1098 engine number.

Should be 1098 - but a picture or two will help!

I'd say a fairly early (judging by carb and air filter) 1098..... Looks like a side entry dizzy cap too?

Certainly has a 1098 cylinder head - so very likely the whole engine is 1098.

Thanks folks.

A couple of supplementary q's - is a side entry dizzy good, bad or just the sign of an early 1098?
Any advantage in changing to top entry and if so, is that just a matter of changing the cap or is there more to it?

Personally I'd say it makes no difference. If what you have is working then leave it alone. Only things you'd have to change would be cap and leads....
