Whats in a petrol tank?

Post by jonali »

1970 Austin badged morris pickup
I need a new petrol tank but new ones seem all to be out of stock and could really do with something a bit cheaper.
I know that other bmc tanks can be fitted but I have yet to find one.
Have crawled around under a number of small modern vehicles but nothing useful so far.

Anybody got any ideas on a model I am likely to find with a tank that would fit?

Is it reasonable to make your own tank? can weld cut drill etc. Anybody done this

Also considering a custom plastic tank as I know of a gent that makes them. Anybody with any experience of this? Does the tank need to be earthed? ie made of metal?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

Probably would but new ones seem to unavailable on esm etc and are a bit pricey for my budget. Haven't as yet found a single morris in local scrapyards. Just looking for other options.

I think that the filler pipe is in a different place or angle on an LCV, correct me if I am wrong. Or is the LCV the same as the Traveller and different to the saloon?

Yes, original LCV tanks have the fill tube point straight out the side. The other models are angled towards the rear. The rest of the tank is the same.

OK so my chances of finding a lcv locally with a useful tank is terribly slim.

Back to the original question then ?

Any ideas?[/quote]

Tank

Post by jonali »

Miracles can happen... A mate of mine turned up yesterday with, not only a morris tank, but a Pick up tank :D

It is in way better condition than mine although I haven't had the chance to clean it fully yet. Hopefully should be able to repair?

Thanks

Take the greatest of care if welding a petrol tank - no matter how 'old'. Flush well with HOT water - and if possible set the tank up so you can fill it with water to just below the part you are welding - which should be on top obviously!
