Possibly silly bulb question

Post by PSL184 »

Rear stop and tail on my 1960 Traveller (flat glass lense). Bought new bulbs and they are too big !!! As in, they stick out too far for the lense to go on. Am I missing a trick or do they require special bulbs?

Hmmm - interesting! Are they significantly different to the old bulbs ? Can't say I have seen any special 'small' bulbs - just the normal ones - about 1.5 " long ?

Hope I am not teaching you to suck eggs :)
Bulbs are held in place by small projections (why we push and twist), different types look the same until you try to fit them. Are the old ones same as the new?

Aye - the flat glass type are deeper set - but if a bulb came out, another should go back in!

The original light fittings didn't have any bulbs in (someone had previously fitted alternative rear lighting !!!) but the lamp holders were still fitted with the flat glass lenses, so I bought bulbs of the standard variety but too long ! I would have thought the lamp holders were correct (as they appear original), however, if deeper ones are available I will investigate...

AAAAH - so indeed these are light fittings for the much nicer 'beehive' lenses! You will need the deepset fittings and rubber boots designed for flat lenses.

Make sure that you order double contact tail/brake light units.
