So how exactly can I use the current 2 pin socket for a cigar lighter?
Just buy a 2 pin plug, connect it in then solder to the cigarette charger therefore not ruining the old socket its self and making it easy to just unplug?
I am not after a permanent thing, only for ipod and satnavs on longer journeys.

Just J-j-j-jiggle it a bit.

I wouldn't recommend that as the old socket isn't polarised - ie. there's nothing to stop you plugging it in the wrong way round and killing the sat-nav etc. It wouldn't matter if you were just plugging a lamp in but electronics don't like reverse polarity. I would just wire a new multi-way socket back to the fusebox via an inline fuse in the engine bay.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Fair point that, even if you marked the positive pin on plug and socket, its not foolproof on a dark night. Prob best to permantently wire in a multisocket adapter as suggested. I have one in my van, which just sits on the parcel shelf and is fed from a convenient ignition supply behind the dash.
