Tail lights problem

Post by crdavidson »

Hi there,
I own a 1963 morris minor 948cc which I've just got back from my garage following a service. They also decided to try and fix my indicators which weren't flashing but just staying on continuously.

They have fixed the indicators (i think they put a new flasher unit in) but I've just noticed my tail and side lights aren't working! In addition the backlight on the speedo isn't working.
All the other electrics are working fine.

I fiddled around with the bulbs on the tail lights (which sit in their sockets a but loose) and they suddenly started working. Everything else started working as well, but now my R headlamp has stopped working???

Any advice on what I should test next?

Cheers Craig

It looks as though wiggling one thing around is disturbing something else. If none of your side/tail lights are working check the brown/blue feed wire from the control box to the light switch and the red wires from the light switch
Also check your wiring and connectors, especially the black earth wires. Check the headlight bulb to make sure that it hasn't just blown

And find another garage for the 'service' ! I would suggest McDonald Minis ( http://www.mcdonald-minis.co.uk/ ) - who know more about the A series engine than anyone near you, have a great reputation - and will easily sort out any 'Minor' problems.

Hi Craig,

What colour are your indicators?

If it's the older version (which flash the white sidelight at the front & the brakelight at the rear), then there's a rather expensive relay unit that's needed - not just the flasher unit.

If you have the later amber indicators (front & rear), then it suggests that you have a wiring problem - quite possibly earth contacts...

You'll find that either a multi-meter or a test bulb will help a lot.

Cheers,

Colin
