Ahh - so never SAE 40 - which was often recommended at that time for 'higher mileage' engines. Our modern 20W50 will therefore be suitable for winter use - since the '50' grade will not apply in the low heat of a gearbox. Dare say it's fine in summer too - it's certainly in my 'box, and the car is summer use only.
