Fuel pump getting hot Why?

Post by ssnjimb »

Hello

Started up the minor today.

decided to keep the original cylinder head instead of the 940 head.

using the hs4 and osselli torquemaster inlet manifold and 1.5" exhaust.

The fuel pump stopped ticking and the car stopped.

When i felt the fuel pump it was hot.

Does that mean its knackered.

Take the delivery pipe off - does it pump now ? To get hot - it must have stopped with the current flowing through the windings, so possibility is that the points are not correctly set so they 'throw over' as the magnet pulls the diaphragm down. Other poss is that the points have somehow 'welded' together - better have a look see!

Hello Bmc

It ran fine before sitting for two weeks.

If i hit the pump it works for a while.

I think i might replace it.

Dont worry i will do a post mortom first and see if i can clean the points.

One more thing where do i connect the breather cannister that comes from the front tappet chest.

Is it the electronic type?
You will soon find out when you take the cap off.
Mine started running very hot and I replaced it with the points type

If it runs when you hit it - it's a points problem. Clean and reset them. My view is that the breather should connect to the carb - so the engine fumes are consumed by the engine. This keeps crankcase pressure down, reduces oil leaks and can also reduce oil consumption.
