home painting-what paint?

Post by ianminor »

this may be a daft question but what type of paint is suitable for spray painting in the home garage? Given that some are highly toxic I want to live to see my project finished. Next question is...where would I be able to get it?

I thought you could no longer buy cellulose. Is it readily available?
What kind of mask do you need to use?

I think you can still get it at some suppliers.

I can still get it and the primer, although some of the primers are hard to get. The masks we use come in a pack of 10 recommended by our paint supplier (3M?)

Yes you can buy celly 'for classic car use' - plenty on ebay. These 'masks' will only be for dust - they don't keep the highly toxic (and flammable) fumes out of your body. After a nasty experience a few years ago - I now ONLY spray outdoors, on still warm day. You could (should) wear a full fresh air-fed respirator if spraying celly in a confined space - and take great precautions aginst the flammable vapours being ignited by lights/compressor etc. Certainly DO NOT have a heater on !!

i spray in my dads garage but we fitted an extractor fan to teh side wall of the garage.

If you live near bridgend in south wales i can recommend "carpaints plus" on the bridgend industrial estate.
