Axel to diff gasket

Post by youngun »

Got to put the diff back in the axel casing, was thinking is it necessary to use a gasket from a dimension/spacing point of view? Or can I just use a bit of Hylomar blue, which will probably be more effective at stopping oil leaks anyway!

Not sure but the paper gasket is so thin I would expect hylomar to be even thicker....

Thats what I was thinking, ive kept a bit of the old paper gasket. So ill measure the thickness then check to see what Hylomar say on their data sheet about thickness.

Thanks,

Is it worth taking it all apart again if it drips?

Never had a leak with Hylomar yet, I dont use it left right and centre for everything but its great stuff. But unlike Hermitite or anything like that its not just a quick bodge, the lads on the Jowett Javelin site seal their split crankcases with it, much better than the original gasket!

The gasket is so thin - I doubt 'spacing' will be a problem. I just re-used the old gasket when I recently changed the final drive, It's fine!.

last one I did, I was doing a parts order anyway so just used the gasket... but Hylomar should be ok.
The diff oil is much thicker than hot engine oil so it's easier to seal.

Hylomar it is then. I was going to re-use the gasket, but a mouse got into one of my carefully labelled tesco boxes of bagged parts

thanks for the help

Don't use mouse - it will make the rear axle squeak!
