Bump stop clearance

How much clearence should there be between the bump stops on the back axle and the body of the car?

At the moment there's about 2-3 inches of clearance on my car.

That seems a LOT! Most have about 1", maybe 1 1/2".
Have the bump stops been cut down - or are thay as supplied ?
In the pics - the car doesn't look to be sitting unusually high.
