First Engine Rebuild

Post by MacQuigley »

Im part way through my very first engine (948cc) rebuild and have a wee problem. When I stripped the engine down I didnt note the way the thrust washers were installed.

Can anyone tell me if they should have the 2 groves to the outside or inside of the centre main bearing ie the "copper" side inside or outside.

Other than that Its gone well and I would say to anyone else considering their first rebild, go for it, but remember and take notes and photos - just in case!

The copper (bearing face) against the crank thrust faces.

Yes - steel against the block - leaded bronze face with slots towards the crankshaft. NOT as aupickup has detailed!

this is a quote from the morris minor manual section AA AA 5 Replace each main bearing and cap, replacing the center main bearing thrust washers in their correct positions with the oil grooves away from the bearing
