Rear hub bearing removal.

Post by youngun »

Im busy rebuilding the back axle at the moment, and have got to the point where its time to strip, paint and reassemble the hubs with new bearings etc. How do you get the old bearings out? Do I have to bite the bullet and go and buy a special tool :-?

Thanks

You are likely need a puller to remove the hub assembly from the axle but the bearing is easily knocked out of the hub with a large socket or a punch

Usually you can remove the hub by putting a punch through the gap in the backplate for the wheel cylinder (once removed) and giving it a sharp tap or two and then pulling on the opposite side of the hub, they usually just come off then.

Last time I got one off, I used a lever on the wheel cylinder to move it. It took a bit less force than I expected but maybe because I had an 18" tyre lever.

I've never had a problem pulling hubs off. As suggested above, any gentle persuasion seems to work well. Bearings come out without any problem. The really tough job for me has always been getting the old oil seal out.....

Especially if someone's glued it in. The trick really is to get behind it as much as possible before trying to force it out.

All sorted. I got the hubs off ages ago using a 3 legged puller.
Removed the bearings using a decent fitting socket, that was the easy part...good job too as the bearings were cream crackered.

Oil seals were "persuaded" out with an old flat blade screwdriver, a hammer and a lot of swearing!

Thanks,

Hello YG,

it has been said before, the half shaft is a simple way of pulling off the rear hub. Remove the large securing nut, bolt the half shaft back to front onto the hub and gently tighten the nuts and this jacks the hub off.

I've done the same thing using a wheel rim with a thick metal plate placed over the centre hole. Handy if your garage wall is too close to the car to reverse the half-shaft! :D

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Just bolt the wheel on - and tug. Never found a tight one yet!
