my new Air filter/rampipe

Post by Mogwai »

Ive had the bits since last year & have finally got round to fitting a decent rampipe & filter to my carb today
Ive always thought the ones available are are a bit compromised for the limited space on a mini so I Have made my own
I wanted the longest possible pipe for the space available & a decent box filter around it
I got a bare spinning & some scrap alloy for a base which I cut & drilled to match the carb face. Done some aluminium welding for the 1st time a bit messy but seems to have penetrated OK
for the filter I used a blank baseplate so I could mount it sideways to suit the car as the wiper motor is quite close. have only done a short road test so far but there is definitely a noticeable increase in power plus it sounds a little quieter than the old K&N one :D
Will have to get it rolling road tested now
Image

Image
Well that looks a good bit of ingenuity only thing I would question is does it flow as well as a K & N filter as the foam ones are often not the best, be interested in your rolling road results though.
Cheers

I used this one as its the deepest of this type itg do so gives plenty of room around the rampipe inlet. The K&N one I had was ok but it was for a mini, quite shallow & the hole was offset very close to the filter element . I have had to richen the mixture slightly to compensate for a flatspot at about 5000+rpm so must be getting more air in than before, may be a few weeks before I can get a rolling road tune to get the right timing & needle sorted
will keep you posted
