I need to replace my fuel pump but how do I know which type it is, the original is missing. After looking at various websites I have found negative earth, positive earth, single points type, twin points type and non polarity it a 1969 model if that helps, how can I identify the correct part, Regards, Steve
Only you can tell us Steve. Your pick up would originally have been positive earth but many have been changed to negative earth. If you are completly rebuilding / rewiring go for negative earth as this allows for modern electrical equipment to be used....

The points types work with either polarity. Only the electronic ones care about positive or negative earth. It doesn't really make any difference whether you get single or twin points.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.
I have just looked under the bonnet and the negetive lead from the battery goes to earth, the old fuel pump is marked AUA 4080, is this the right pump ?? Thanks Steve
I have 2 AUA 4080 fuel pumps with the pick up but neither are fitted, the last time this pick up was used was in 1991, it has run since then but this was by gravity feeding fuel into the carburettor, the pump has been removed and the fact there are 2 identical pums would suggest a replacement pump was tried but unsuccesfull. rather than attempting to repair either of these pumps I was going to buy a complete replacement, I thought this would be the easiest and simplest solution until I discovered there are several pumps listed. From all the info you have all kindly posted I think I just need the points type

If a replacement was fitted and didn't solve the problem, it's quite possible that both pumps are actually OK. If you haven't already done so, I'd test them both before buying a new one.
Once the pump is rebuilt and refitted is it worth/possible fitting a fuel filter before the pump, the fuel has been drained from the fuel tank but I am concerned about rust/dirt form the old fuel tank getting into the pump, or is the pump quite capable of dealing with this and in which case a filter from the pump to the carb would suffice ? Thank you again, Steve
