Bonnet Hinges

Post by shemat »

I'm trying to replace the bonnet hinges on my '53 series II. How do I get to the back of the hinge to remove them from the car? Also, is there anything I should know about fitting the new ones and getting the alignment right? Thanks in advance.

You wil need to feel inside the car behind the glovebox lines to get to the last nut. Probably easier to remover the liners. When refitting just leave everything finger tight as this allows you the final adjustment then screw all up tight when you are happy with the fit.

Hi Matthew, a good car you have there, '53's are the best...regards to removal, i am sure it is possible to get to the nuts without taking the glovebox and intrument panel off, but it would be tricky. so to make it easier, take the glovebox out and the instrument cluster. really quite easy to do both of those, and then you will ahve super access to the bolts.
regards to allignment...a bit of trial and error works for me, just make sure it goes through the "lock" hole okay. if it has old paint, then you could just line it up with the original markings left on the paint.
hope this helps!

Also on a 53 the wiper motor is on the drivers side just below the nuts leaving very little room to get your fingers in! Much easier to loosen the mouting and push it out of the way a bit.. Be very caeful not to drop the nut down into the sill section, stuff a peice of cloth in to stop this happening.

Good luck.

Its probably a daft question, but how do I get the glove box liner out without hurting it?

Don't know how it fits in a '53, but I have a '61 with aftermarket liners.
For all the work I've been doing. It was easy to unscrew them and then push them to the side, rather than take them out, when I had to get my hand in there for hinges, wiper, speedo, etc...
(I have a glove box on both sides).

Fit a blanket or something thick over the wings in case you drop the corner of the bonnet on them and scratch the paint. Also get help holding the bonnet.
