Mystery Switch

Post by bouncingoffthewalls »

Hello Peoples!!

I have just found out by sitting upside down in the front seat that there is a mystery switch located under the lights button.

Its is a square button which can move from the left to the right.

Have turned the car on and off with it in either position and also turned lights all on and still dont seem to be able to figure out what it is.

does any one else have any ideas what it may be??

thanks heaps

It controls the lights in the speedometer when the headlights are on.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

As Alex said. I've always wondered why anyone would want to drive in the dark with an unlit speedo...

It can be a distraction
Of course, when the Minor was designed there was less "focus" on speeding so not knowing your speed in the dark would be less of an issue than it is today.....

I always thought it was for turning the clock lights down when you was parked and not in the vehicle dont know why you would do that but dooooo could it be for courting couples who like to feel there way around in the dark [NO] I think another tablet is due

The mystery is which direction is off? It could be assembled either way and probably was.

All the little tiny bits of the mechanism of mine sprang in a million different directions when I took it apart to clean it during the resto, and it doesn't switch off now 8)

Why were you sitting upside down in the drivers seat?

Think the intention was so you can leave the side lights on as parking lights but turn the dash lights off, from the days when parking lights were compulsory (or so I'm told!). Yes its a horrid flimsy switch that tend to fall apart when disturbed. Heard of various modern uses for them - if you wire the dash lights so they're on all the time you can use the switch as a hidden electric washer switch if you don't want to drill extra holes in the dash on earlier cars, or as a secret petrol pump cut off switch for security...
