Hmm that could be useful info if my new cable doesn't do the job, thanks very much

You can test the speedo using an electric drill with a suitable 'bit'. The drill needs to be able to run reverse direction - ie for loosening screws! But if the speedo runs nice and smoothly with the drill - then any other problem must be the cable, or unusually - the gearbox drive.
