REAR WING FITTING (OR NOT)

Post by PAULJ »

What a day I had today, putting the wings on my restoration. front ones went on ok but the rear.......
These were good second hand ones. Came off a car so should have gone straight on shouldn't they? The problem is that the holes don't line up. I can get the front bolt in and the rear. I have managed to get a third bolt in, which has now put a crease in the top edge and left a gap of about half inch where the beading goes. I take it there's no difference between two and four door wings? Did I check whether they fitted before I painted them?
Anyone else had this problem and what did you do.

Yes, they can be a pig to fit - I find it easier to work front to back with the bolts rather than one front, then one at the back etc...

Or maybe they are just poor second hand wings. If the wing is long enough ie fits well at the back and front and around the radiused flange, then you might need to simply elongate the holes in the wing or drill new ones.

Refit the wing bolting up the bottom front one first then move backwards allowing the wing to form to the mounting flange shape. You might need to elongate the holes.
If the wing is too long then this can be lost at the rear ,where it is partially hidden by the bumper. If you need to elongate the holes ,then just brush in the paint onto the bare or dameged areas, allow to dry then re tighten.

They aren't Traveller wings are they - they are different! Otherwise as above - expect to elongate the holes.

would be able to tell at a glance if they were traveller wings by the lack of holes for the lights

could be a combination of things unless you know all the history of the car, damage, repairs etc

just elongate the holes as jonathon says, it will be the only way possibly to get them to fit

sometimes the wings ( pattern ) i presume are to long at the back abd do not follow nicely the rear end,
