Van rims/standard rims

If you replaced a standard rim with a LP917 would the extra width be on the inside, the outside or both?

I'm certaintly no expert on the matter, but here's a quote from another thread.

Van rims (LP917) are 4.5" (these have approx 2/3rds of the extra width on the outside and 1/3rd on the inside). Even with the samll increase on the inner edge these bring the tyres pretty close to the front trunnions.
As mentioned, the LP936 is similar to the 971 but with the rim reversed to give a lot more wheel towards the outside of the car.

Trouble is the envelopes for these are harder to get than the rims!

I am sure its on the outer rim as Dennis once posted a simple way to tell the difference by looking at the outer rim depth.

a front door yale key will fit perfectly on the outer rim part if the wheel rim is a LP917, sometimes the numbers are not clear to see on the hub part

a 936 rim is reversed of the 917 so the off set is to the outside, better for clearing the front trunnions if you fit a 165 tyre
936 are even harder to get than 917

Thanks for the explanation there Dennis ! But i would still like to know - were both kinds 'standard' from BMC - or were the 936 rims an aftermarket offering ?

So - do you think they had problems with tyre rubbing the trunnion - and so reversed the rim in production to get clearance ? Does anyone have an 'original' late LCV with the reversed rims fitted ??

As I understand it, only the 8 CWT LCVs had 4.5" rims fitted.

On Gill's van we have 936 on the rear and 917 on the front and they don't rub on the trunnions with a 165 tyre fitted.

yes it was only the 8cwt that had the wider rims and mainly austin, same goes for the pick up

prety certain the 936 were an original item by bmc
but they are so rare now, but in my mnd look a lot better
in fact not unlike the minor development ones

i had a 1970 8cwt pick up
they were ariving late, but do not know the date when they started the production

OK, my wheels are back with a new set of tyres and I've just been out to do a rough measure up. The tyres were on so it was a bit difficult to do an accurate job but at least that did show me that the swell in the sidewalls of a 165/70 tyre on a LP917 was pretty much the same as a 145/80 on a standard rim. So that in itself answers a few questions I have seen posed on here before.
So the measurements are taken from each rim bead to the corresponding face of the metal that forms the mounting plate on the wheel (ie between the bolt holes.
Standard: inner 90mm outer 20mm
LP917: inner 100mm outer 30mm

So I can conclude from this that the extra width is divided evenly.
