Gearbox fitting
I picked up an engine and box this weekend and would like to try the box in my series 2 as its now jumping out of 4th as well as 2nd which is a real pain.
Looking at the workshop manual it looks like the short stick remote control is a bolt on extra bit and after removal I will be able to stick my non remote long stick assembly in place of it.
I don't want to remove the box to find it don't fit so thought I would ask everyone here first.
They are both smooth sided not ribbed if thats any help and the new box and engine are out of a 62 (mines a 56, last of the series 2's).

hello, i don't know how much i like being known as the guy who did this! it kind of scares me as if something goes wrong i would feel bad! that said...
i did do it! Smooth short stick to smooth case long stickis a direct swap and very very easy. literally a bolt on/off jobby. possibly have to grind down a bit of the gearstick(where it connects with the gear selectors) but i am not certain, a trial and error will determine that. if so, that too is obviously very basic.
It is only tricky when you go ribbed case long stick, it's a lot of work and not much metal is left after for the bearings(i think) to sit on, but it did work! But unless you are going 1275 you don't "need" to fit the 1098 'box, so it's okay to just go 948 'box.
hope that answered your question!!

Thankyou for the info. It seems I was right then and will have lots of fun (weather permitting) swopping boxes this weekend.
