lumpy bumpers

Post by rupert »

I'm rebuilding the front of my minor and have discovered that the front bumper sticks out about an inch (or more) on either side. I did crash the car once  so may have knocked things a bit out of line. Is the rear bumper the same shape? (i.e. can i use it to check the position of the bumper mounts - I haven't crashed the rear of the car as far as I know!)

does anyone have any other advice for lining things up?

Wonky minors ain't cool!

thanks

Rupert

Rupert, the rear bumper is a different profile & won't sit right at the front guards.
It should bolt on as the bumper irons are the same spacing, but it might hit the grille panel.
Usually in an accident the bumper irons get pushed back into the inner wheel arch as well as the bumper itself getting distorted.
I can see in your last photo in the Engine Bay Restoration section that the N/S iron has been pushed back in the inner guard - was this repaired while all apart?

Rupert do you need some pictures to campare with or some dimensions, I think Scott has a valid point as well, is the problem the same on both sides.
Is your car a genuine Highway Yellow as I have only ever seen 2.
I had a quick look at your website and was a bit concerned with your anti-roll bar comments as others have said its a better design than the Owen Burton one what problems have you had and is it resolved ?

Hi Everyone - thanks for the comments,

Yeah the LH bumper iron is pushed in a bit, but I can't get hold of a new
one at the moment so I'll have to make do at the time being. I'm repairing the bit which connects the iron to the tie plate so I have the opertunity to get it all in line properly.

Matt, when I said the bumper sticks out, I mean when looking at the front of the car it sticks out the side of the car a bit. Its as though the bumper has been "straightened" if you know what I mean.

Scott, yeah I can see now how rear won't fit properly - I could really do with a spare bumper to check whether mine is out of line. And the photos are all very recent so its all still apart being repaired!

Kevin, some pics would be great. Just on the detail of how the bumper fits onto the wing. As for the anti roll bar, I've had it on for about 6 years and the car used to be my daily driver and was always a bit low so it got a bit of a hammering. The mount on one side broke and Mr Grumpys sent me one free of charge when I told them (I had better put that on the site really!). Its been fine ever since. I think some of the problem is the difficuly I had getting the tie bar/bolt and anti-roll bar bolt all in line - it may have weakened it. The only other problem with it was the large nuts they used to clamp the end mounts to the bar (quite hard to explain - nuts with threaded holes in the side - with little screws in to act as grub screws, these then slide over the bar and the small screws are tightened to hold the mount to the bar if you see what I mean :-? ) - anyway my dad sells fastners so I swapped them for proper items which clamp onto the bar alot tighter.

She is a real highway yellow car <so proud!> I have only ever seen one other at the 50th anniversary do at Blenheim palace. I know of another (a convertable) in scotland. Its not surprising there are so few as the colour was only done for 6 months. I have had lots of problems with tradesmen not knowing it was genuine (I didn't know until recently) so they tried (and failed) to match the colour to the faded yellow. About 7/8 years ago she was re-sprayed a yellower yellow which was a bit annoying. The restoration work they did wasn't too hot (the lack of rustproofing didn't help) so I'm having to re-do alot of stuff - and everthing I work on is getting painted in YL9 as I go!

phew! sorry about the long post so many things to reply to!

thanks again for all the advice

Rupert

If you mean that one side of the front bumper protrudes more
than the other then I think you will find,as i did, that an accident
has pushed the mounting tube backwards so that it has pushed
the inner wing to which it is welded, back too. I cured mine
by knocking the tube, which is visible from inside the inner wing, back
to where it should be with the aid of a 4 pound hammer!

A bit of heat will help along with the 4lb hammer.
As you said, Rupert - the bar has been "straightened". Unless you're very strong, it will need to be pulled apart to be repaired properly. Usually the splash tray (the sheet metal section) deforms very easily.

Rupert, dont know if you have seen Theo`s posting about his website but there are some excellent pictures including the bumper mounts that should answer your questions about positioning.
I hope Theo does not mind the advertising for his site but its looking good and should answer Ruperts questions :D
Cheers

Kevin, offcourse I don't mind. Glad to help. :D

Rupert, if you would like me to do some measurements, I can do that for you. I will probably mount the front again within 2 weeks, but now it's still like the last pictures on my site.

thanks for the tips guys!
Theo, some of those pics are just the area I was after.

As for the bumper itself - it is a bit "straighter" than it should be so I'll try to track down another one. The minor in my local scrappie has a front end crash so that one is out of the question!

cheers

Rupert
