Bottom trunnions

please excuse my stupidty, Im more used to ball joints here!! Ive managed to work out how to get the top trunnions off the king pins (they just unscrew

). But the bottom ones have eluded me, I havent forced anything as such yet, do they just unscrew as well?? Or am I being a complete tard?

You need to take the fulcrum pin out before the lower trunnion will unscrew.

Have you removed the bar that holds the front and rear suspension arms. The lower trunnion is left or right hand thread depending on which side of the car.

Oh the king pins are completely off the car, and have been for a year or so now!
its just the trunnions and steering arms that are on the kingpins now, so the bottom ones just unscrew?

If there is any grease left in them. Otherwise you may need to clamp the swivel pins in a vice and twist the trunnion off with a bar through the hole

I think Ill have to do the latter, they feel tight trying to unscrew by hand. The top ones came off easy, probably because they're knackered!

They will only come off (as Alex has already pointed out) once the fulcrum pin has been removed! Unless they are totally ruined of course.

be carefull yg if they are just rusted together(Probabable cause) forcing them off might cause damage to the treads on the pin,you obviously have read that the pins are unobtainable,give them a good soak in oil,Diesel is one of the best penetrative oils.stand them in a tub full for a day or two.Good luck

iirc the trunnion is made of weaker stuff than the leg so you should be fine. Take this as imho though.
In my case the trunnion 'collars' were worn and loose as a wizard's sleeve bit the legs were still fine (thankfully!)

Stuck the pins in derv/petrol/jizer mix. That mix has never failed unstick stuff yet!

If the threads are so fragile that they can be damaged by unscrewing - you NEED new trunnions !

Trunnions practically fell off today when I took them out the Jizer tank. Definately knackered. Pins seem ok though, whats the best way to check?

The threads on the pin generally should have flats on the top, if the top of the thread is pointed the chances are it is worn.

The thread on the top of the pin might give you a clue to what I mean.

Only way to check for sure is to screw on new trunnions - with some grease - and check if there is any excessive play when the trunnion is one full turn away from the top of the thread!
