I think that will have been me, and yes I'm convinced if the saw blade had been half a mm closer to the exhaust it wouldn't have broken through into the inlet. I used an ordinary hacksaw, a vice, and lots of elbow grease. The problem is you can't tell exactly how close you are to breaking through on either side, so you might be lucky and not break through but I can't see a way to guarantee success.
