Timing chain

Post by chell »

hi everyone my first post! can anyone advise me on changing my timing chain bearing in mind ive just done my first oil & filter change.is it just a matter of taking the old off and replacing with new provided i line up the mark on the pulley & the pointer on the timing cover. then to line up the two marks on the chain wheels. Or am i aiming too high and asking for trouble with not much mechanical knowledge?

Yes, it is very straightforward to do, but, why? They don't need changing like timing belts. Chains last for many thousands of miles and it would have to be very stretched before it started to make too much noise....

It is easy to do. I would advise buying the kit that comes with the new cog wheels and the rubber tensioners - at least that way you are not putting a new chain onto a worn cog.

Have a search on here (under usefull tips) for the post about removing the starter dog (the bit the starting handle goes into) from memory you put the spanner onto the nut and rest the spanner on top of the passenger chassis leg, spin the engine on the starter (but remove coil HT lead so it doesn't start) this is a great tip and works so well.

Rattle is most likely from the tappets (although not unheard of from the chain). I would set the tappets first and see if it helps with the noise. They should be set right anyway.....

It easy to do but you have to follow the correct process. Its best you get a workshop manual and follow the procedure from the book. Alternatively come round and I'll show you ;-)
